In the late 18th century, the Shah Dynasty came to power, and the country was unified under King Prithvi Narayan Shah. The Shah Dynasty ruled Nepal until 2008, when the country became a republic.
Nepal was never colonized by a foreign power, although it did come under the influence of both India and China at different times in its history. In the mid-20th century, Nepal began to open up to the outside world, and today it is a vibrant country with a rich culture and history.
